Although WHO does not recommend the use of waterpacks while frozen, it is recognized that frozen waterpacks might be used for the storage of OPV and therefore few appliances for the freezing of waterpacks have been maintained in the PQS list.
Note: the PIS 2000 catalogue (and new items added to the PIS since publication of the 2000 edition) has been definitely abolished for this E003 category on 1 October 2010. The full revision of performance specifications and verification protocols has been achieved and endorsed by the steering committee at that date. All items included in the PIS catalogue are considered as not suitable for UN purchase unless they are PQS prequalified and part of the list to be found through the link below:
All new applications for prequalification of refrigerators and freezers for storing vaccines and freezing waterpacks must follow PQS procedures as described in the Guideline for manufacturers of vaccine refrigerators, vaccine freezers and icepack freezers (WHO/PQS/E03/GUIDE.1.3) and Guideline for manufacturers of solar power systems (WHO/PQS/E03/GUIDE.2.3). All items prequalified 4 months prior to the review date will be subjected to the annual review. The first version of the performance specifications and verification protocols for E003 category refrigerators and freezers for storing vaccines and freezing waterpacks was achieved and approved by the PQS Steering Group on 6 July 2010. The transitional period to have PIS products for submission of prequalification is now terminated. Only product PQS prequalified are now considered as suitable for UN purchase.
