Terms of Reference:
  1. Upon request from WHO, conduct whole genome sequencing of pathogenic organisms causing vaccine preventable diseases (VPD), including rotavirus strains collected as part of routine VPD surveillance using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology and analysis of the generated datasets using bioinformatic tools.
  2. Upon request from WHO, conduct molecular characterization of specimens collected during outbreaks and public health emergencies as part of support for monitoring, preparedness and response to VPD disease outbreaks in Africa.
  3. Provide technical guidance to WHO on strategies to improve laboratory molecular diagnostics, molecular typing and Next Generation Sequencing of rotavirus diarrheal strains and other enteropathogens to detect novel and re-emerging strains.
  4. In consultation with WHO, conduct validation of tools and new molecular diagnostics for detection and characterization of unusual or rare VPD strains to guide future studies and development of new vaccines for VPD.
  5. In consultation with WHO, organize capacity-building and training workshops on whole genome sequencing of priority VPD pathogenic organisms.
