  1. To support WHO by undertaking cooperative field and laboratory research on ecology, investigative methodology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of bacterial vector-borne diseases  
  2. Under WHO’s guidance; Consultation, collaboration, and training on surveillance and control programs, field techniques, ecological concepts, and the development of guidance documents and strategies for the prevention and control of bacterial vector-borne diseases 
  3. Supporting WHO in the provision of laboratory diagnostic support, including special standardized diagnostic reagents, in epidemic situations and for endemic regions in North America; maintenance of a reference collection of isolates and materials for use by the scientific and medical community; and training on laboratory diagnosis for bacterial vector-borne diseases
