Resumen
1. The strengthening of national health information systems (NHISs) constitutes a challengefor all countries and stakeholders to provide evidence in policy development and decisionmakingat all levels of national health systems and to track progress towards achieving themillennium development goals.2. Health information systems have faced many serious constraints, including lack of writtenhealth information policy, scanty and unevenly distributed resources, fragmentation and lack ofstandards. Furthermore, data are passed on to the national level without being analysed or used, and most information systems tend to be “data-driven” instead of “action-driven”.3. Some priority interventions to strengthen NHISs include elaboration of clear policy; settingup and strengthening management structures at all levels; strengthening staff capability andperformance; integration; strengthening the use of information technology; self-assessment;using information for action; and operationalizing NHISs.Citación
