An illustrated guide to the technical design, operation, calibration, performance, safe use, maintenance, and testing of virtually all equipment - from hand-operated sprayers to fixed-wing aircraft - currently used for the chemical control of vectors. Now in its third edition, the book has been updated to reflect new thinking about the use of pesticides as well as to incorporate several major advances in equipment design. Revisions also respond to the need for practical advice, based on the actual use of equipment in the field, that can help purchasing agencies select appropriate equipment. Throughout the book, numerous photographs, diagrams, and line drawings are used to promote understanding of both the technical features of equipment and the impact that these features can have on the efficient control of vectors. The book has five main parts. The first introduces the principal methods of pesticide application and alerts readers to the many factors, from the droplet size of sprays to conditions of wind and temperature, that can influence effective application. The second part presents and explains the components of pesticide application equipment. A guide to ground equipment is provided in the third part, which profiles equipment used to produce sprays, mists, aerosols, and thermal fogs, to apply dusts and granules, and to trap tsetse flies. The fourth part, devoted to the use of aircraft, assesses the place of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters in control programmes noting that the development of ultra-low-volume applications has made the use of aircraft competitive with ground applications where large-scale operations are required. The final and most extensive part presents WHO specifications for the manufacturing and testing of twelve different types of equipment. The book concludes with a series of annexes offering detailed step-by-step instructions for conducting tests and trials to assess the performance of equipment and determine whether it complies with WHO specificationsen
