Sri Lanka has achieved tremendous success in addressing communicable diseases. Many diseases, especially vaccine preventable diseases and some of the neglected tropical diseases are either eliminated or near elimination. Poliomyelitis waseradicated in 1993, while leprosy is no longer a public health problem since 1995. The last indigenous case of malaria was reported in 2012. Sri Lanka achieved elimination status for lymphatic filariasis at national and district levels in 2015. The country continues to remain in low prevalence status for HIV/AIDS.
