| dc.description.abstract | It is generally believed that WHO's South-East Asia Region, with nearly a fourth of the world's population, and carrying a heavy burden of disease and poverty, can make or mar global health. Conscious of this grave responsibility, Member countries and WHO are making concerted efforts to address existing and emerging health challenges facing the Region. The highlights of these efforts, in the broad areas of communicable diseases; noncommunicable diseases and mental health; family and community health; sustainable development and healthy environments; health systems development; policy, programme planning and partnerships, and general management are covered in this Report. The main objective of these endeavours is to reach the marginalized and vulnerable groups through well-functioning and effective health systems. In order to strengthen health development activities and to cope with the increasing volume and complexity of work in the Region, WHO has launched several initiatives and mobilized resources through a broad range of stakeholders. Here again, the emphasis is on priority areas of concern identified jointly by WHO and the Member countries. As this Report clearly states, Member countries in the Region have made significant progress particularly with regard to achieving some targets set in the Millennium Development Goals. | en_US |
