Technical consultation to review HIV surveillance in India

AbstractIn support of the National AIDS Control Organisation of India, WHO SEARO convened a technical consultation from 23 to 25 April 2008 in New Delhi to review the HIV surveillance system in India. The meeting was attended by 54 national and international experts who critiqued the current system and made recommendations to strengthen various components of the surveillance system. The report summarizes the discussions and recommendations of the technical consultation to review HIV surveillance in India in the following areas: (i) surveillance in populations with high-risk behaviours; (ii) surveillance in the general population; (iii) surveillance for sexually transmitted infections; (iv) HIV/AIDS case reporting; and (v) laboratory services for surveillance (vi) cross-cutting areas.
