AbstractThe WHO strategy for reducing the leprosy burden in endemic countries based on timely detection of new cases and their treatment with effective chemotherapy in the form of multidrug therapy (MDT) has been very successful. However, recent evidence on the emergency of Mycobacterium leprae strain resistant to the most important component of the standrd MDT, i.e. rifampicin, has been a cause for great concern among experts and programme managers. The situation, if left unchecked, is likely to lead to a significant setback in the efforts at controlling the disease in the coming years. The report summarizes outomes of the Workshop on Sentinel Surveillance for Drug Resistance in Leprosy at Hanoi, Viet Nam on 20-22 October 2008.
