Progress of the Kala-azar elimination programme

AbstractThis meeting report outlines the progress achieved in elimination of kala-azar. The meeting was held as a side-meeting during the Fifty-ninth session of the Regional Committee for South-East Asia in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on 23 August 2006. Thirty delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives and Nepal, along with representatives from the World Bank, JICA, other partners, and the WHO Secretariat, which included the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR/HQ), attended. The Regional Office offered to extend all possible technical support encourage commitment and promote joint collaborative efforts by building effective partnerships, and through social mobilization to Bangladesh, India and Nepal, in their kala-azar elimination programme initiative. The report also outlines the World Bank's commitment to support kala-azar elimination in India and also in expanding partnerships with TDR, World Bank, GTZ, JICA and other stakeholders.
