Meeting of experts on doctor-patient relationship
Other TitlesWHO-SEARO, New Delhi, 15-16 February 2011
AbstractThe need for strengthening the doctor-patient relationship has been voiced in several forums. A good relationship between doctors and patients is an important dimension of the quality of health care. The pressing demands on the doctor's time and the heavy dependence on technology for diagnostic and therapeutic practices has perhaps diluted the personal touch that is so necessary for a conducive doctor-patient relationship. The doctor-patient relationship is affected by a multitude of sociocultural, economic, political and health systems-related determinants. To discuss issues related to doctor-patient relationship a meeting of experts was convened in WHO-SEARO on 15-16 February 2011. Participants included representatives of medical councils and medical associations, medical teachers, policy makers and legal and consumer rights experts. This report is an account of the proceedings of the meeting and includes the conclusions and recommendations arrived at after two days of intensive deliberations.
