Application of sociocultural approaches to accelerate the achievement of MDMGs 4 and 5 : Report of a biregional consultation.
AbstractThis is a report of the Bi-regional Consultation for the Application of Socio-cultural Approaches to Accelerate the Achievement of MDGs 4 and 5 organized by the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia in collaboration with the Western Pacific Regional Office and WHO headquarters (Departments of Making Pregnancy Safer and Reproductive Health and Research) . The consultation was a platform to discuss socio-cultural dimensions of maternal and neonatal health and the way they are synthesized in programmes for improving maternal and neonatal health. In the course of the Consultation, participants provided feedback for the finalization of the proposed draft Strategic Framework for Socio-cultural Approaches to Accelerate the Reduction of Maternal and Neonatal Mortality. It was concluded that socio-cultural aspects are critical factors to influence maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Due consideration should be given to addressing socio-cultural barriers in both supply- and demand-side interventions within the context of revitalized primary health care for delivering responsive maternal and neonatal health care.
