Many countries, including central and eastern European states, are following with great interest the outcomes and impact of the Nordic experience with patients' rights and citizens' empowerment: what are the benefits and possible side-effects, how is patient and professional satisfaction influences, what are the possible links to the current debate on priority-setting and cost-containment, are just a few of the interesting questions raised throughout Europe. This meeting's objective was to bring an update of the development of patients' rights in Europe and draw a plan of action for future activities of the network. It also aimed at identifying new areas for collaboration and new methodologies for promoting patients' rights, based on the principles of the Declaration on the Promotion of Patients' Rights (‎1994)‎ and the Ljubljana Charter on Reforming Health Care (‎1996)‎en
