Abstract
Swimming pools, spas and similar recreational water environments are commonly encountered and extensively used by both resident and tourist populations worldwide. Research has indicated that their use many affect health, and WHO may be requested to provide guidance in this area. Fourteen experts met at a WHO Consultation at NSF International, WHO Collaborating Centre for Research for Drinking-water Safety and Treatment, to discuss the development of WHO guidelines for safe recreational water environments, including swimming pools, spas and similar environments. The participants made a series of detailed recommendations on the structure and content of the guidelines and the needs for future research. Following the Consultation, immediate action was to be taken to complete the guidelines for safe recreational water environmentsCitation
