Report of the Workshop on the Role of Academic Institutions in Partnership in Health Care, Barcelona, 10-14 February 2003
AbstractA workshop on the role of academic institutions in partnership in health care was held in Barcelona (Spain), 10-14 February 2003. This was one of a series of meetings within the "Partnership Among Health Stakeholders" programme and focused on how curricular change in the education of health care professionals can emphasize public health and community based education. The participants of the workshop were representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as consultants and WHO staff. The workshop focused on professional education and the need for country specific strategies for reform. Each participant presented an overview of the situation and future objectives in their country. The workshop reviewed the different strategies for curriculum design including general aspects of curricular change, community based education, competence-based education, problem-based learning; and also discussed issues related to individual and community health such as health promotion, analysis of public health, environmental health, health planning and administration. In conclusion, possible follow up strategies for medical education reform in the countries of the participants were identified
