Effects of HIV/AIDS among older people infected or affected by HIV

WHO SAGE-WOPS is a SAGE sub-study conducted in partnership with the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Unit Uganda Research Unit on AIDS, Uganda, and the Africa Centre Demographic Information System (ACDIS) and population-based HIV survey, South Africa.

This study was conducted to provide data on the effects of HIV/AIDS among older people infected or affected by HIV in Uganda and South Africa. The aim of this study was to describe the health status, well-being and functional status among older people either infected with HIV themselves, or affected by HIV/AIDS in their families. The impacts of caregiving and ART were also examined.

Baseline (Wave 1) data were collected on over 500 individuals in 2009/10 from the General Population Cohort and Entebbe Cohort of the MRC/UVRI Uganda and the African Centre Demographic Information System surveillance area in South Africa. Wave 2 interviews were completed in 2013. Wave 3 interviews were completed in 2016 in Uganda and 2017 in South Africa. Wave 4 was completed in 2019 in Uganda. Wave 5 in Uganda will commence in the coming months.
