Public health prizes and awards
Francesco Pocchiari Fellowship The fellowship was established in 1991 with funds provided by the Italian Government to honour the memory of Professor Francesco Pocchiari, former Director-General of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Rome). Every two years one or two travelling fellowships are awarded of US$ 10 000 each, funds permitting, to researchers from developing countries to enable them to gain new experience relevant to their research. Candidates must have a keen interest and a strong record in carrying out research on health issues in developing countries. The recipients of the awards are announced at a special ceremony during the World Health Assembly. Procedure for the proposal and selection of candidates

Any national health administration may put forward candidatures for the fellowship. Fully documented proposals are submitted to WHO in Geneva either directly or through one of the six WHO Regional Offices. The WHO Executive Board designates recipients of the fellowships on the recommendation of the Fellowship Committee.
