Comments:
The Committee did not establish an ADI because of the lack of data on the hormonal effects of sulfathiazole. The mechanism of sulfonamide toxicity involved the thyroid-hypothalamus-pituitary axis, it was decided that carcinogenicity and long-term studies on sulfathiazole were not necessary.Studies the Committee would consider pertinent include: thyroid and pituitary functional studies in rodents; metabolic & residue studies in food-producing animals, and mammalian genotoxicity studies.
