Evaluations

Evaluation year: 2013

ADI:
NOT SPECIFIED

Comments:
Based on a systematic review of the literature published since the last evaluation, the Committee reaffirmed its previous decision on ADIs “not specified” for somagrebove, sometribove, somavubove and somidobove, established at the fortieth meeting (WHO TRS No. 832, 1993).
MRL Comment:

Comments:
The four analogues of bovine somatotropins, somagrebove, sometribove, somavubove, and somidobove, that are produced by recombinant DNA techniques were evaluated by the Committee at its 40th meeting. At that time, the Committee allocated ADI & MRL values 'not specified' for recombinant bovine somatotropins (rbSTs), as the Committee concluded that use of these drugs according to good practice in veterinary medicine did not represent a dietary hazard to human health. The Committee reconsidered the need the establish ADI & MRL values for rbSTs at the current meeting. The Committee confirmed the previous decision to not established numerical values for an ADI or MRL based on the following: insignificant changes in the quantities of milk discarded after testing for antibiotic residues following the introduction of rbST; low concentrations of rbST and IGF-I residues in milk; degradation of IGF-I in the gut and its abundance in gut secretions; extremely low concentrations of ingested IGF-I compared to endogenous production; no evidence that rbST stimulates the expression of retroviruses; no link between rbST treatment and BSE; and no significant changes in the composition of milk from rbST-treated cows that could contribute to an additional risk for the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
MRL Comment:
MRLs: Milk and edible tissues (cattle): NOT SPECIFIED; the ADI and MRLs apply to somagrebove, sometribove, somavubove, somidobove (edible tissues defined as muscle, fat, liver, kidney)
