Evaluations

Evaluation year: 2025

ADI:
NOT SPECIFIED (group ADI including thaumatin and thaumatin II)

Comments:
Based on the amino acid sequence similarity of thaumatin I, thaumatin II and recombinant thaumatin II, JECFA revised the ADI “not specified” for thaumatin (INS No. 957) to a group ADI “not specified” including thaumatin (INS No. 957) and thaumatin II produced by recombinant methods in the seeds of the tobacco plant Nicotiana tabacum.
Intake:
The high dietary exposure to thaumatin was estimated to be up to 0.33 mg/kg bw per day for children. JECFA concluded that the dietary exposure to thaumatin does not present a safety concern.

ADI:
NOT SPECIFIED
Comments:
Considering that the anticipated maximum daily intake of thaumatin is calculated to be in the order of 2 mg/kg day and in view of the fact that thaumatin makes an insignificant contribution to the normal protein diet and is established into normal body constituents, JECFA decided to establish an ADI “not specified”.
