Evaluation year: 1978

Comments:
The group comprises alkyltin & aryltin compounds. Trimethyltin and triethyltin are readily absorbed from the GI-tract and produce edema in the white matter of the nervous system in all species studied. These compounds are also potent inhibitors of cellular metabolism. Most of the other higher alkyl/aryltin compounds are poorly-absorbed from the GI-tract and are less toxic via the oral route than when administered parenterally. No evidence of carcinogenic or teratogenic effects were noted with these compounds in animals. The Committee was unable to derive a tolerable intake value for organotins as a group due to the large variation in toxicity between compounds. They recommended that each organotin compound be evaluated individually with respected to toxicity and to potential for migration from food packaging.
