The report that focused attention on the scale and scope of untreated psychiatric morbidity in developing countries. Noting that an estimated 40 million people suffer from severe forms of mental disorder, the opening section assesses recent trends in psychiatric emergencies, chronic psychiatric disorders, and the number of patients seeking care because of mental health complaints. Strategies for improving mental health services are illustrated through examples taken from a number of national programmes.
