Providing safe drinking-water is one of the most effective instruments in promoting health and reducing poverty. The global importance of water, sanitation and hygiene for development, poverty reduction and health is reflected in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals for Environmental Sustainability and Child and Maternal Health. In support of these goals, the 3rd and 4th editions of the WHO Drinking Water Quality Guidelines (‎2004 and 2011, respectively)‎ promote Water Safety Plans (‎WSPs)‎ as the central element of a "Framework for Drinking-water Safety" which defines the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders. WHO and the Australian Government are in a third phase of a Water Quality Partnership for Health which is at the forefront of the WSP work in the Asia Pacific region (‎through SEARO and WPRO and member countries)‎. WHO-SEARO organized a regional workshop in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India from 18-20 November 2013 to review progress of the water quality partnership in six countries in the South-East Asia Region and identify challenges and achievements and to prepare a plan of action for addressing the challenges. This report features the proceedings of the meeting which resulted in a clear understanding by all participating countries and RO of the current level of progress and any course corrections, a common understanding of some of the emerging issues such as climate change and links with other WASH initiatives such as Household Water Treatment and Storage, and a common understanding of the major themes of master training and impact assessment.en_US
