Резюме
Reducing disparities in health outcomes and access to health services is critical not only to ensure future gains in health of the population, but also to strengthen social inclusion. As a first step, this requires assessment of existing disparities, and a regular monitoring of their trends. Using existing and available data in Maldives, this study examines what these trends currently reveal about the patterns of health inequality in Maldives. The analysis is based on secondary data: the STEPS survey, the Vital Registration System, Vulnerability and Poverty Assessment Surveys, and the Population and Housing Census 2006. The study concludes that in Maldives, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) impose a dominant epidemiological burden for both the rich and the poor. The study makes important recommendations that include strengthening of research and health information systems for producing reliable data for informed policy-making. It also reiterates the importance of the role of the State in financing and delivering health care, especially towards the prevention and control of NCDs.Описание
