Life Tables for WHO Member States

Beginning with the year 1999, WHO began producing annual life tables for all Member States. These life tables have several uses and form the basis of all WHO's estimates about mortality patterns and levels world-wide. A key use of these life tables is in the construction of healthy life expectancy (HALE) which is the basic indicator of population health levels used by WHO. For the Wold Health Statistics 2008, comparable life tables for 1990, 2000 and 2006 were estimated.

Estimates of life tables for each year were computed for successive World Health Reports as shown in the table below. Care should therefore be taken when comparing different years since the list of Member States, methodology and data reflect the World Health Report for which the life tables were computed and may not be comparable with those published in another Report.
