Terms of Reference:
  1. 1. In collaboration with PAHO, the Center, supported by Staff in the Foodborne & Diarrheal Diseases Branch & the Biostatistics & Information Management Branch, provides reference identification &, when appropriate, characterization in the form of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, subtyping, & virulence testing of Shigella strains for production & evaluation of diagnsostic sera. 2. The Center supplies, free of charge, shigella strains for production & evaluation of diagnostic antisera. 3. The Center provides training for workers from national shigella centers, particularly in developing countries, in the isolation & identification of shighellae. 4. The Center will use staff in Epidemiology Sections to undertake epidemiologic research in this field & write guidelines for the prevention & control of epidemic dysentery & community outbreaks of Shigella infections. 5. The Center will use staff in FDDLS to perform applied research to develop appropriate technology for laboratory diagnosis & epidemiologic research. 6. The Center provides PAHO with the Epidemiologic data from isolates of Shigella in the United States that are collected through the National Shigella Surveillance & are published yearly. 7. The Center provides periodic surveillance on shigella isolated nationally & internationally & to monitor the development of antimicrobial resistance in this organism.
