- To serve as an information exchange center (at a global level) in relation to health, and environmental issues associated with mercury compounds, in general, and the Minamata experience, in particular.
- To conduct training and awareness for the prevention, mitigation, research and risk assessment associated with environmental exposure to mercury compounds.
- To provide technical advisory services in relation to mercury compounds, and other selected pollutants to WHO and its member states, as appropriate.
