Terms of Reference:
  1. To prepare the national quality control standards of Chinese Materia Medica Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences has made many significant contributions in the establishment of national quality control standards of Chinese Materia Medica (CMM). The center has fulfilled a number of national key projects to facilitate the state establishing professional criterions of CMM. In the next four years, the center will implement the quality control technique and criterion research on Chinese medicinal material, processed pieces of crude Chinese drugs, extracts and Chinese patent medicines. These efforts will support the state’s endeavor to consummate the quality control system and elevate the plan of quality standards of CMM. 
  2. To conduct research on safety, efficacy and mechanism of Chinese Materia Medica The center will implement research to establish safety and efficacy standards of Chinese Materia Medica (CMM) further more to study their mechanism deeply. Thereafter, the state resolve to settle the problems of clinical practices of CMM will cashing on the center’s efforts bring forward better guarantee of patients’ health and smooth development of CMM sector. 
  3. To conduct study of traditional Chinese medicines for prevention & treatment of senile & cancer diseases towards the development of new medicines and new pharmaceutical forms The center will implemented R&D study of new medicines against frequently occurring and difficult and complicated diseases in the next term, at the same time, to develop new pharmaceutical forms that will exert better medicinal effects. In the next term, the center will conduct R&D new medicines for age related diseases and tumor. 
  4. To conduct research on anti-malaria drug Qinghaosu and its compound formula Since the discovery of Qinghaosu(artemisinin) 30 years ago, the studies on the ingredients with anti-malaria activity have been promoted into many fields. Following the new advancements of the studies in this field, Professor Youyou Tu, the inventor of artemisinin, will deeper her research of Qinghaosu, especially its compound formulas 
  5. To compile reference monographs of Chinese Materia Medica and translate them into other languages During the past 25 years, the center compiled and published 11 English reference materials and books, playing an important role in spreading knowledge on Chinese medicine in the world. In the following four years, the center will continue to summarize the new experience in various fields of medicinal plant research, compile and publish more monographs on medicinal plants and related English reference materials. 
  6. To provide training opportunities for Chinese Materia Medica to foreign scholars The center has run 47 training courses for 127 international scholars from 18 countries, basing on different educational and professional backgrounds since 1983. The past 8 years also witnessed 8 high level workshops of traditional Chinese medicine sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Commerce and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine organized by the center. There were 249 scholars and officers from more than 92 countries taking part in the training courses. In the next term, the center will continually offer its high level training courses for scholars, as well as international trainees of medicinal plants. According to their different study backgrounds, the center will make the most of its excellent train team and sate-of-the-art-research apparatus to provide lectures and experimental practice for them. 
  7. To fulfill missions and tasks requested by WHO Since 1983, the center has dispatched numerous experts to put forward technical support for WHO, organized professional forums entrusted by WHO continuously, and given warm receptions to WHO officers from different levels and regions. In the next term, the center will make further step of cooperation with WHO, to strengthen the partner relationship with traditional medicine department of WHO and WPRO, as well as the WHO office in China, and to fulfill all missions and tasks requested by them.
