Key inclusion & exclusion criteria

Inclusion criteria: Primary inclusion criteria:
Fever plus one of
headache
confusion
coma
seizures
Secondary inclusion criteria:
CSF white cell count b50 cells per mm2, irrespective of HIV status, or visible bacteria in the counting chamber or on Gram's stain
Exclusion criteria: Primary exclusion criteria:
Known terminal illness
Cerebral malaria
Head trauma
Secondary exclusion criteria
CSF culture stain or antigen positive for an organim known to cause fungal or mycobacterial menignitis
CSF WCC `50% neutrophils
Age minimum:
12 Year
Age maximum:
100 Year
