Key inclusion & exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria: General variables
1. Fever (>38.3 degree C) or Hypothermia (core temperature <36 degree C);
2. Heart rate > 90/min–1 or more than two sd above the normal value for age;
3. Altered mental status;
4. Significant edema or positive fluid balance (>20 mL/kg over 24 hr);
5. Hyperglycemia (plasma glucose >140 mg/dL or 7.7 mmol/L) in the absence of diabetes.
Inflammatory variables:
1. Leukocytosis (WBC count >12,000 uL–1) or Leukopenia (WBC count <4000uL–1);
2. Plasma C-reactive protein more than two sd above the normal value.

Exclusion criteria: 1. History of chronic cardiovascular disease;
2. Pregnant woman or during the Menstrual period;
3. Malignant tumor or other severe disease.

Age maximum: 80
