Drug development and evaluation for helminths and other neglected tropical diseasesHelminthiases and other neglected tropical diseases place an enormous burden on developing countries. Yet few drugs are available for control, mechanisms of drug action are poorly understood, and treatment regimens may not be optimal. Moreover, extended drug use risks the development of drug resistance. Thus it is essential to develop new drugs and evaluate how to use current drugs to best effect. This research activity therefore aims to progress candidate drugs into development; generate evidence on efficacy and safety; and determine field safety and effectiveness of registered drugs and optimize their use.
