Newborn health

These newborn clinical care videos have been provided to RHL by the Global Health Media Project.

  • Newborn Care Series: Feeding with a gastric tube
    This film shows the correct and safe way to feed a baby with a gastric tube. It highlights involving the mother and features a chart that shows the volume of milk to give at each feeding according to the day of life.
  • Newborn Care Series: Inserting an IV
    This film shows how to insert an IV into the vein of a newborn. It shows gathering supplies, finding a good vein, applying a tourniquet, insertion technique, taping and splinting the IV, and administering medication.
  • Newborn Care Series: Referring a sick baby
    This film shows the essential features of a referral process. It covers involving the family, transport, preparing the baby for the journey, writing the referral note, and what to do if referral is not an option.
  • Newborn Care Series: Newborn physical exam
    This film demonstrates a newborn physical exam. It shows 3 parts: observation, vital signs, and the head to toe exam. It also shows normal variations and abnormal findings.
  • Newborn Care Series: Breathing problems
    This film covers how to evaluate a baby with a breathing problem. It shows rapid breathing, chest in-drawing, and nasal flaring. It advises to give these babies oxygen if possible and refer them to a higher-level facility.
  • Newborn Care Series: Umbilical infections
    This film shows how to evaluate the baby with an umbilical infection, how to differentiate a mild infection from a severe one, and how to treat the mild case and refer all severe cases to a higher-level facility.

  • Blood pressure measurement
    Produced by the British Hypertension Society, this video demonstrates simple standardized methods of blood pressure measurement that can help ensure reliability and accuracy.
  • Kangaroo mother care
    This video describes the method of skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her newborn as a low-cost alternative to conventional clinical approach for the care of low-birth-weight infants.
  • Steps to overcome shoulder dystocia
    This video demonstrates the MAPS sequence of manoeuvres (McRoberts, Anterior shoulder, Posterior shoulder, and Salvage) for the management of shoulder dystocia.
  • Active management of the third stage of labour
    Active management of the third stage of labour includes administering a uterotonic after birth of the baby, controlled cord traction and clamping and cutting of the cord once the uterus contracts.
  • Vaginal breech delivery and symphysiotomy
    Vaginal breech delivery is generally not recommended. However, manual skills for this procedure are needed for cases where caesarean section is not an option. The technique is illustrated in two vaginal breech deliveries.
  • Vacuum extraction
    Vacuum extraction technique is illustrated. Compared to forceps extraction vacuum extraction can be performed by less experienced staff that are trained in its use.
  • Caesarean section evidence-based surgical technique
    This caesarean section video focuses on individual aspects of the operation such as the abdominal incision, suturing of the uterus and other components and discusses the evidence base for those components.
  • External cephalic version: Why and How?
    External cephalic version is one of the most effective procedures for reducing breech presentation and avoiding caesarean section. The technique and the evidence are presented.
