Helen Smith is a Lecturer at the International Health Group, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool, UK. She is a social science health researcher with specialist skills in the application of qualitative methods to health services research and research synthesis. Dr Smith has a Masters degree in Applied Population Research and a PhD degree in which she evaluated an interactive education programme (the Better Births Initiative), which aims to improve the quality of delivery care for women in developing countries. Dr Smith is Deputy Director of the DFID-funded Effective Health Care Research Programme Consortium. She currently holds a grant from the UK Medical Research Council to synthesize qualitative research on factors influencing pregnant women’s uptake of interventions to prevent malaria in pregnancy. Her research interests include translating research into policy and practice, maternal health and user experiences of health and health-care services. She has research experience in low- and middle-income countries.
