Bart Criel, MD, DTM&H, MSc, PhD, is Professor of Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium. In 1981-1982, he worked in the internal medicine department of the general Stuivenberg Hospital in Antwerp, followed by a year of general practice in the greater Antwerp region. Between 1983 and 1990, he worked as Medical Officer at health district level in the former Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) within the frame of the bilateral Belgian Development Cooperation. In October 1990 he joined the Department of Public Health at the Institute of Tropical Medicine. Dr Criel is currently Director of the Health Financing unit. He teaches postgraduate and masters courses in the field of health services organization, health care financing and systems of social protection in health. He is also involved in health systems research in several sub-Saharan African countries and in India. His main areas of interest are the study of local health care systems and the organization and financing of systems of social protection in health.
