Heather Brown is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Worthing, UK and Clinical Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Worthing Hospital. She is also Senior Clinical Lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Brighton, UK. Her areas of clinical interest are intrapartum care and maternal medicine, in particular for women with mental health problems and social vulnerabilities in pregnancy, such as substance misuse and teenage pregnancy. Her research background started in women’s health in resource-constrained countries and focussed on developing international initiatives to promote humane and evidence-based care for women during childbirth. This formed the basis for her PhD. Currently her research interests include working with the Cochrane Collaboration Pregnancy and Childbirth Group, participation in multicentre clinical trials, ongoing work with WHO and NICE and qualitative research looking at the factors that result in women having a traumatic birth experience and how these experiences can be prevented.
