Haroldo Capurro is a paediatrician and neonatologist working in the Latin American Centre for Perinatal Research (CLAP), Montevideo, Uruguay. His main interests are epidemiological surveillance in perinatology and training in perinatal research. He is the Principal Investigator of the Latin American Perinatal Epidemiologic Surveillance Project, and is collaborating with a programme aimed at training women in the community in reproductive health issues. Between 1971 and 1981, he was a researcher at CLAP. After that he became one of the co-founders of CREP (Centro Rosarino de Estudios Perinatales, Rosario, Argentina), where he worked in research and training until 1997. Between 1990 and 1997, he was a consultant to the Vital Statistics Department of Ministry of Public Health, Argentina, which was supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
