Recommendations for data collection, analysis and reporting on anthropometric indicators in children under 5 years old

28 May 2019 – WHO and UNICEF released the “Recommendations for data collection, analysis and reporting on anthropometric indicators in children under 5 years old” guidance document. This document is intended as a reference for the recommended steps in collecting, analyzing and reporting malnutrition estimates based on anthropometric data in nationally representative surveys. Its objective is to set out standardized methods for generating representative malnutrition estimates based on anthropometric data relating to weight, length/height and age in children less than 5 years old. Improving data quality will fill up data gaps and will allow countries to track their progress towards the Global Nutrition Targets for 2025 and the SDGs for 2030 more effectively.

22 May 2019 | First WHO annual report on trans fat elimination shows some countries are taking action, but more is needed. Six countries restricted industrially produced trans fat since 2018, and another 24 countries, including the European Union, recently adopted trans fat regulations that will come into effect over the next two years. Yet, more than 110 countries still have no regulations against this harmful compound, meaning five billion people are at risk for industrially produced trans fat exposure in the foods they eat every day, according to the first annual global progress report on trans fat elimination issued today by WHO.

16 May 2019 | Geneva – More than 20 million babies were born with a low birthweight (less than 2500g; 5.5 pounds) in 2015—around one in seven of all births worldwide according to the first-ever estimates documenting this major health challenge. These findings and more are documented in a new research paper developed by experts from the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, published in The Lancet Global Health.

The elimination of industrially-produced trans fat from the global food supply is a WHO priority and a target in the 13th General Programme of Work (GPW), which will guide the WHO through 2023.

UNICEF-WHO-WB Joint Child Malnutrition Estimates 2019 Edition

03 April 2019 – The 2019 edition of the joint estimates for child stunting, overweight, underweight, wasting and severe wasting have been released. Globally, in 2018 149 million children under 5 suffered from stunting, over 49 million were wasted (amongst these, nearly 17 million were severely wasted and are at an increased risk of death, requiring urgent feeding, treatment and care to survive), and 40 million were overweight. Good nutrition remains a pressing health need in children under 5 years of age.

8 February 2019 – eLENA has been updated with a new feature providing links to more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and reports assessing the cost-effectiveness of a wide range of nutrition interventions in a variety of contexts and settings.

The e-learning platform Nutrition Knowledge Hub (NKH)

17 January 2019 – Responding to the global nutrition challenges, the World Health Organization (WHO) has designed an e-learning platform Nutrition Knowledge Hub (NKH) to build the nutrition capacity of its staff. The platform was launched on 14 December 2018 and aims to build the technical and functional capacities of all relevant WHO staff through e-learning courses and key nutrition-related training and knowledge materials. Aligned with WHO’s thirteenth General Program of Work (GPW13), the NKH aims to contribute to the acceleration and increase of nutrition impact at the country level. The Nutrition Knowledge Hub offers free courses to reach a large public, raise awareness on the malnutrition problem and WHO’s response. The NKH was developed in collaboration with United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Access the Nutrition Knowledge Hub

29 November 2018 – The latest edition of the Global Nutrition Report is released. The 2018 Global Nutrition Report reveals that the global burden of malnutrition is unacceptably high and now affects every country in the world. But it also highlights that if we act now it is not too late to end malnutrition in all its forms. In fact, we have an unprecedented opportunity to do so.
