NGOs State Their Views. Essential Drugs Monitor No. 010 (1990)
(1990; 1 page)

The tenth edition of the Monitor includes a short article on the opinions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that were present at the 43rd World Health Assembly. Medicus Mundi International voiced their continued support for the Action Programme and suggested increased legislation on exports and imports in order to ensure the quality of drugs leaving or entering a country. The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) emphasized the importance of trained, skilled pharmacists as a key factor in quality assurance. The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Associations stressed collaboration with WHO to help developing countries with drug related issues such as quality control. Finally, the World Federation of Proprietary Medicine Manufacturers highlighted the need for appropriate drug information for lay consumers as a gateway to proper self-medication. This NGO also believed that an understanding of traditional medicines, especially within primary health care, is important.
