General information
A benzimidazole derivative that inhibits cellular enzyme systems specific to various helminths.
Clinical information
Uses
Treatment of creeping eruptions due to Ancylostoma spp. (cutaneous larva migrans).
Dosage and administration
Adults and children: lotion should be applied liberally over the tract of the larvae twice or three times daily for 7-10 days.
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity.
Precautions
Treatment should be suspended immediately should a rash or any other signs of hypersensitivity occur.
Use in pregnancy
Tiabendazole has been shown experimentally to have teratogenic potential. Treatment should preferably be deferred until after delivery.
Adverse effects
Systemic toxicity rarely occurs after topical application.
Storage
Lotion should be kept in tightly closed containers.
