This article addresses the need for new approaches to education for pharmacists based on their changing role in the medical field. The pharmacist is becoming more involved with patients, which has led to the addition of “clinical pharmacy” to many schools of pharmacy. This new discipline aims to relate knowledge directly to patient care, enabling the pharmacist to adopt a consultative role to consumer-patients and other health professionals. The article also highlights the new consideration of patients as a “whole person” and the awareness of how their behaviour and attitude can affect health outcomes. To bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practice, it is suggested that pharmacy students experience ward rounds and bed-side discussions with their medical student counterparts. This new approach to pharmacy curriculum and education would facilitate the advancement of clinical pharmacy and lead to improved patient care.
