(1998; 17 pages)

Resumen

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious and growing problem worldwide. WHO recognizes the significant impact that resistance is having on public health and is committed to action, as exemplified by the Resolution of the World Health Assembly.

The Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring programme in the WHO Division of Emerging and other Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Control (EMC), working in partnership with others both within and outside WHO, has as its long-term goals:

· to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with infections caused by antimicrobial resistant pathogens;

· to reduce the rate of emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
