Alfalfa products: caution label: Malaysia

Malaysia. After reviewing the adverse reactions associated with the ingestion of products containing alfalfa (Medicago sativa), the Drug Control Authority has issued an additional requirement for all such products in which alfalfa is the major component. These products should carry the following statement:

“This products contains alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Individuals with a predisposition to systemic lupus erythematosus should consult their physicians before consuming this product.”

The amino acid, canavanine, found in the alfalfa seeds, is thought to be the factor contributing to the exacerbation of systemic lupus erythematosus in consumers with a predisposition to this condition.
