The Internet is a rapidly expanding, invaluable information and communication resource. But with increasing numbers of patients and health professionals looking for medical information on the Internet, the dangers of biased information and unlawful sale of pharmaceuticals are growing fast. Many National Drug Regulatory Authorities (DRAs) are seeking to counter such problems by providing access to unbiased, good-quality drug information on their web sites.
This report of the Joint Workshop features the WHO Model Web Site for DRAs wishing to create or improve an existing web site, and a fruitful exchange of ideas that identified the minimum information an effective DRA web site should contain.
Pharmaceuticals and the Internet represents just one aspect of WHO’s contribution to drug quality assurance and safety. The three pillars of WHO’s work in this area are: developing internationally recognized norms and standards; establishing and maintaining effective drug regulation; and information support for pharmaceutical regulation.
