General information

Zinc oxide is a white or yellowish powder which reflects or scatters light in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared range. Ointment is prepared by mixing zinc oxide in simple ointment.

Uses

To prevent sunburn, premature ageing of the skin, and skin cancer and related lesions.

Dosage and administration

Adults and children: the cream or ointment is suitable for use on small areas of sensitive skin during prolonged exposure to sunlight. These include the nose, cheeks, tips of the ears and the shoulders.

Precautions

The cream or ointment may be cosmetically unacceptable for application to large areas of skin because of its colour, smell and texture.

Storage

Preparations should be stored below 30 °C.
