General information

Aluminium diacetate solution is an astringent that is used as an antiseptic agent. It is poorly absorbed, even when applied to damaged skin.

Uses

An antiseptic agent used in wet dressings to assist healing of suppurating superficial wounds, tropical ulcers and lesions caused by pemphigus and impetigo.

Dosage and administration

All doses are suitable for adults and children.

Suppurating superficial wounds and tropical ulcers:

A 1:20 (0.65%) dilution of the stock solution is used in wet dressings. The dressings should be applied for 0.5-2.0 hours each day and changed every 5-15 minutes. For tropical ulcers, a 2- to 4-week course of treatment with procaine benzylpenicillin is also required (see Benzylpenicillins - Tropical Ulcers).

Pemphigus:

Compresses soaked in a 1:2.6 (5%) dilution of the stock solution are applied every 4 hours.

Impetigo:

Superficial crusts should be gently separated with a 1:20 (0.65%) dilution of the stock solution.

Precautions

Dressings should not be applied under plastic or rubber occlusion.

Adverse effects

No adverse effects have been reported.

Storage

Solutions should be stored in well-closed containers.
