Over 30 Parliamentarians from around the world joined the Global Fund’s 4th Partnership Forum in São Paulo – thereby ensuring that the voices of this important group of stakeholders were also heard during the strategic conversations.

Preceding their active participation in the main Program, the Parliamentarians took the opportunity on 27 June 2011 to meet for an in-depth discussion on key issues surrounding legislatures across the world.

Commencing with lunch chaired by Brazilian Senator Marta Suplicy (PT-SP) and the Global Fund’s Executive Director Professor Michel Kazatchkine, the group focused on the important theme of “Access to Affordable Medications: The Challenges and Opportunities Ahead”. The Parliamentarians heard from a broad range of speakers, including Brazilian MP Paulo Teixeira (PT-SP), Member of the European Parliament David Martin, Canadian MP Paul Dewar, Burkina Faso MP Salvador Yameogo, Dr. Jorge Bermudez from UNITAID, and speakers from civil society and the Global Fund.

At the conclusion of this specialized workshop the Parliamentarians adopted a comprehensive statement, entitled the ‘São Paulo Parliamentary Declaration On Access To Medicines And Other Pharmaceutical Products.’ The Parliamentarians present agreed to work together with civil society to promote the declaration in their home countries and regions, and in key International and regional Parliamentary networks including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the SADC Parliamentary Forum, the Pan African Parliament, AWEPA and other networks.
