A well functioning medicines supply management system is vital in assuring an un-interrupted supply of essential medicines that are efficacious and of good quality, physically and financially accessible and used rationally. Carrying out an in-depth assessment of the system provides information for targeted interventions in strengthening the system. In the light of the above, WHO supported Tanzania mainland in August 2007 to undertake an in-depth assessment of the supply management systems of essential medicines and medical supplies in the public health. The survey was carried out using the WHO draft tool for the in-depth assessment of the medicines supply management system (June 2007 version).
