The World Drug Situation, 1988
(1988; 64 pages) [French]

Abstract
In 1977 the World Health Organization published the first model list of essential drugs, and in 1981 the WHO Action Programme on Essential Drugs was launched. Since then a large number of countries have adopted an essential drugs policy. The progress achieved in those countries has been described in many WHO reports, but no systematic description of the drug situation at global and national levels in the public and private sectors has been undertaken in recent years. The Conference of Experts on the Rational Use of Drugs held under the auspices of the World Health Organization in Nairobi in 19885 acknowledged the need for more information on the drug situation at the global and national levels, and requested WHO to provide this information as part of its revised drug strategy.
