Le Programme commun des Nations Unies sur le VIH/SIDA (ONUSIDA) unit dans un même effort les activités de lutte contre l'épidémie de huit organismes des Nations Unies: le Fonds des Nations Unies pour l'Enfance (UNICEF), le Programme des Nations Unies pour le Développement (PNUD), le Fonds des Nations Unies pour la Population (FNUAP), l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour le Contrôle international des Drogues (PNUCID), l'Organisation internationale du Travail (OIT), l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'Education, la Science et la Culture (UNESCO), l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS) et la Banque mondiale.
L'ONUSIDA, en tant que programme coparrainé, rassemble les ripostes à l'épidémie de ses huit organismes coparrainants, tout en ajoutant à ces efforts des initiatives spéciales. Son but est de conduire et de soutenir l'élargissement de l'action internationale contre le VIH sur tous les fronts. L'ONUSIDA travaille avec un large éventail de partenaires -gouvernements et ONG, monde des affaires, scientifiques et non spécialistes - en vue de l'échange de connaissances, de compétences et des meilleures pratiques à travers les frontières.
