Remeron (mirtazepine): strength confusion: USA

United States of America. The ISMP has received multiple reports warning about the potential for confusion with the antidepressant mirtazepine (Remeron: Organon). Mirtazepine is available in 15 mg and 30 mg tablets, both strengths are packaged in the same size boxes and containers with similar labelling. Additionally, the most prominent feature on the label, below the drug name is the the tablet count of “30”. On the 15 mg bottle, the strength is displayed to the left of the drug name on a dark background. Thus, 15 mg tablets could easily be mistaken for 30 mg tablets if the tablet count (30) is interpreted as the strength (30 mg). The ISMP has contacted the manufacturer to request label changes.
